The Most Sought After Room in the House
Forty years ago Better Homes and Gardens magazine coined a term that is used extensively in real estate – the “family room.” Since then, the family room has grown into one of the most sought-after rooms by people in the house market.
Consider the following from a consumer preference survey by the National Association of Home Builders and Better Homes & Gardens:
• Sixty-four percent said that the basic price of a house must include a family room.
• Seven out of ten home buyers said that even with a den, a family room or great room is a must.
• Forty-five percent said that they want kitchens and family rooms that are open to each other, but with a divider, such as a counter.
The survey concluded that an open kitchen-family room will make a house sell better.
Currently family rooms are larger than early ones. Architects are beginning to design “space zones.” One zone is adult-oriented; another, children oriented. Both are usually connected with the kitchen and deck or patio.
Forty years ago, Better Homes and Gardens introduced the term "family room" in real estate. It has since become a highly desired room and boosts house sales. Today's family rooms are larger, and architects are creating separate zones for adults and children connected to the kitchen and outdoor areas.
